Answers

  • 1, In short the Neoliberal world view during WW1 looked at how the world was not united, many nations were independent and there were no global institutions that prompted peace between all nations. Nations would be more willing to cooperate under a global hegemony. So with this view, the world during the beginning of WW1 was a breeding ground for war due to how weak the connection between nations was. The Neorealist view as it relates to the beginning of WW1 takes into account that there were many revisionist states that sought to bring an end to the current systems in place in the global ecosystem. On top of that there were many power vacuums present in both Europe and Asia.
  • 2, Soft power still matters in such a way that it can show off a state’s culture and society and make it appealing for others to respect their power. The nation may create international policies in order to spread its influence through soft power rather than forcing others to agree with their ideals.
  • 3, It is the theory that if there is a single power controlling the cooperation of the majority of nations in the world that there will be less likelihood for war. This is a viewpoint explored by the Neoliberal school of thought, especially on how it related to the first world war in the early 20th century. Because of the lack of a centralized power in Europe, and the world, there were many nations that sought to make a change to the structure of geopolitics at that time. The lack of a global hegemony was also the cause for there to be a lack of international cooperation and support groups, this in turn leads to a disorganized and disagreeable geopolitical stage.
  • 4, According to George Kennan it was imperative that the United States halt the expansion of the Russian nation and their influence. This is because the U.S. viewed Russia as a threat in many aspects. Some of such being their opposing political ideals and their attempts at matching U.S. military might.
  • 5, The world as described by Angell is a world that lacks a solid interlocked international system. In the early 20th century nations were not grouped together by common causes and rather there were states striving to gain supremacy and make their mark upon the world. For Stiglitz, at the turn of the 21st century the global ecosystem of the world is much different. States are more interconnected than ever and share many of the same ideals due to international policies and support groups that lead to a more globalist idea. Instead of many states in a free for all, the world now is more of an opposition between ideals. Ideals such as communism during the cold war separated the world between idealistic borders. Now the world has more of a global world view which allows for much more cooperation between nations than ever before.
