Work History

Engineer/Conductor

Portland and Western Railroad
2014.03 - Current
  • Operating as both a conductor and a locomotive engineer, I work everyday with the understanding of the rules and procedures put into place by the Federal Railroad Administration with the General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR) and special instructions put into place by the specific properties I operate on.
  • I'm required to understand and abide by authorities to run on mainline track, permissions to enter work zones with maintenance crews, understand verbal instructions and communications, our paperwork, signaled territories, restricted speed, the understanding of track conditions we would be operating on, and the safe operation of every locomotive and rail car in our possession.
  • As a locomotive engineer, I'm expected to see that proper train handling and our speed (for both hauler trains and switching jobs) is maintained using throttle modulation, the use of the dynamic braking system within the locomotives, and the correct usage of the air brake system within the entirety of the train.
  • When approaching public and private road crossings, I make sure that the crossing/ditch and headlights are on full brightness and the proper time frame for the locomotive bell and horn were in accordance with the GCOR rules.
  • It's also very important from my standpoint to make sure that I'm aware of where everyone in my crew is and what they are doing before I started any movement for the safety of everyone.
  • When working as a conductor, I oversee making sure all the safety devices/appliances and the air brake system on the rail cars are in good working condition and able to transport within yards, hauler jobs, and to customers facilities, as well as coming up with an efficient and safe way to tackle the day's duties.
  • I would be working the ground to throw switches into different tracks, coupling up and uncoupling rail cars, lacing up air hoses for brakes, properly securing rail cars, oversee shoving movements, spotting rail cars into the right locations in customer facilities, and maintain proper communication with my engineer with either radio transmissions or hand signals.

Railcar Carman, Progress Rail Services
2012.04 - 2014.01
  • At Progress Rail, we were contracted out to perform duties of inspecting and repairing rail cars for the Union Pacific's intermodal ramp at their Brooklyn yard
  • We would do in-depth inspections on empty and loaded double stack well cars and make such repairs as changing out wheels, the air brake rigging and systems, metal crossover walking boards, ladders and steps, trailer locks, and many securement bolts by using forklifts, hydraulic jacks, torches, and many hand tools
  • We were also tasked to properly perform class one and yard transfer air tests on the outbound trains from the yard to make sure that a hundred percent of their brakes worked properly.
