Work History

Grocery Clerk

New Seasons Market Seven Corners
Portland, OR
02.2013 - 12.2024
  • Welcomed customers, offering assistance to help find store items. I worked in all three areas of the grocery department. General Grocery, or dry as it is referred to. This includes breaking down pallets of freight, rotating items on the shelves according to expiration dates. And organizing the back stock in the storeroom.
  • Perishable groceries are stored in the dairy coolers. This is similar to dry grocery, with much shorter shelf life dates. Most of these items would have to be pulled from the shelf two to three days before their expiration date, depending on type. Yogurt would be pulled at an earlier date than milk or cheese, for example.
  • I mostly worked in the frozen section on the days that it came in. This was much more physical and included me using a power jack, which is essentially a forklift that you don't drive but operate from behind. On the days that the frozen freight came in, I would be responsible for working all of it. Usually from one to three pallets. This would have to be broken down immediately because of a lack of storage space in the freezer, and the fact that it could melt. Again, rotate the items on the shelf according to the expiration dates, but in a quicker manner because of the temperature on the sales floor.
  • Over my time at New Seasons, I held several positions. I started in 2013 as a housekeeper. I would come in before the store opened and use a floor machine. Keep the designated customer seating area clean and stocked with silverware, plates, condiments, and napkins, along with keeping the surfaces clean. This job also included cleaning bathrooms, sweeping floors hourly, and cleaning the office once per shift.
  • During COVID, I took a leave because I have a compromised immune system from a kidney transplant over twenty years ago. I came back and worked the overnight freight shift for roughly a year, then switched back to daytime grocery in December 2022.

Caterer/Kitchen Prep Cook

Bridges Catering and Cafe 2617 NE MLK Ave 97212
Portland, OR
10.2003 - 01.2013
  • At Bridges, I baked the pastries for the restaurant, along with the general prep. They were open from 7 a.m. through 2 p.m., with breakfast served all day, and lunch from 11 a.m. through 2 p.m. I baked all the pastries for the restaurant, along with breakfast prep, and occasionally worked the line when needed.
  • I mostly worked in catering as a cook, sometimes serving banquets, but never as a waiter or front of house. My work schedule varied with the jobs. We had many standard monthly clients, where I would set up continental breakfasts in the mornings. I would go in early to bake and set up fruit platters, then drive and deliver for meetings. I would do similar work for all meal times, not just breakfast. My job often included driving one of the company vans to set up meals. This was dependent on my time management skills, with little room for error, as I often had two or three jobs to set up and later return to break down and clean. As I started off saying, my schedule varied with the jobs we had for that week. On a Monday, I would come in with several set jobs for the week, maybe three to five, and as the week went on, we would often add jobs. What I would finish the week at could be up to twenty or more hours more than I was planning on at the beginning of the week. This was a small family restaurant that would have to take any work we could get. I once worked an eighteen-hour shift, sandwiched between ten-plus-hour shifts.
  • I left there for more stability and benefits at New Seasons.

Restaurant Supervisor

Miners Saloon and Casino
Cooke City, MT
04.1998 - 05.2001
  • In the late 1990s, I lived in a small tourist town northeast of Yellowstone. The summer tourist season went from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Over a five-year period, I probably worked at every restaurant and hotel in that town, from cooking to cleaning rooms. I believe I shoveled snow off the roofs eighty percent of that town. This was a small town with a small workforce, so I took work wherever I could get it, and I feel that I never burned any bridges there. My favorite job was working for the only ski guide in the area.
  • In April of 1998, a friend and I leased the kitchen of one of the only bars in town. Though we didn't actually own the place, the restaurant was ours. We bought an oven and had the only pizza for a hundred miles. We also served more healthy salads and sandwiches than were previously there. Up until then, the bar food was mostly microwaved or fried. Montana does not have the same law where you have to serve food with alcohol, like Oregon has. The standards were lower, and I am happy to say that within years, the bar's reputation switched to being a restaurant that served alcohol instead of a bar with food. I left after three years, and my friend, whom I started with, was able to outright buy the whole building in 2001.
