Passed my CAL-TPAs

The California Teaching Performance Assessment (CalTPA) for Special Education is a state-mandated evaluation for credential candidates. Administered by Pearson, it assesses a candidate's ability to plan, instruct, assess, and reflect on teaching practices aligned with California's Teaching Performance Expectations (TPEs). [1, 2, 3, 4]

The assessment is divided into two instructional cycles completed during your student teaching or internship. [1, 2, 3]

The Two Instructional Cycles

  • Cycle 1: Learning About Students and Planning Instruction
You will gather information about your students to understand their learning needs, strengths, and interests. You will then design a series of lessons that apply accommodations, modifications, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) strategies to eliminate barriers to learning.
  • Cycle 2: Assessment-Driven Instruction
You will focus on a single learning goal, teach a lesson, and collect/analyze student work. You will use formal and informal assessments to evaluate student progress and determine your next steps for instruction. [1, 2, 3, 4]
