Growing up I was surrounded by an environment that had a primary focus of helping our community. Working in my family's bicycle shop from the age of seven gave me an appreciation for physical activity and the health it provides. This resulted in a strong desire to work in an environment involving helping people meet their personal goals to function better and more independently.
Something I am proud of is my determination to achieve something I set my mind to. An example of this was receiving my black belt in karate, which required me to make a thesis when I was 15 years old. The thesis needed to show a thorough understanding of body mechanics for it to function properly. My junior year of high school I joined our ski race team despite having never skied before. Due to my competitive and determined nature, I qualified as an alternate for the state championships my first season.
Having the opportunity to work with people and watch their growth through physically and mentally demanding challenges is immensely gratifying, and something I would love to do for the rest of my life.
I primarily work as an assistant athletic trainer for the football team, and I have adapted to working with other sports including baseball and soccer.
- Setting up for games, then working on a field throughout the game and fully cleaning up afterwards.
- Performing daily physical therapy treatments on athletes, including therapeutic exercises and modalities such as ultrasound and electrical stimulation.
- Responding promptly to emergencies involving injured athletes while on duty at practices or competitions, while providing emotional support to athletes during their initial injury and recovery process.
- Providing direct support to head athletic trainer in managing day-to-day operations of the sports medicine clinic.
- Maintaining and cleaning treatment room equipment, and inventoried training supplies and medical equipment.
- Traveled with sports teams to assist in medical coverage.
I grew up working in my family’s bicycle shop and was lucky enough to develop a good work ethic and customer service skills at a young age. I had continued to work for my parents through the ongoing changes and challenges associated with the pandemic.
- Adaptability has been necessary to have a small business survive recently, which is another skill I am grateful for having developed.
- Greeted customers and answered inquiries about products and services, then completed sales/ running a cash register.
- Maintained knowledge of sales and promotions, return policies and security practices.
- Tracked inventory levels by replenishing stock when necessary.
- Performed minor maintenance on customer's bikes such as tire inflation, chain lubrication, and brake adjustments, and provided guidance regarding proper installation techniques for various bike components.
While tutoring and being enrolled in 17 credits, I was asked by my high school ski race coach to become a coach myself for the local ski park’s annual race program. The age range of my group was 5–10-year-olds which I thoroughly enjoyed. - For this age, it was important that I showed leadership skills for the kids' enjoyment and safety.
- Performed regular assessments of student performance to identify areas needing improvement while maintaining accurate records of student participation in activities and progress made over time.
- Adjusted coaching techniques to meet kids' needs and address strengths and weaknesses.
- Demonstrated various skiing techniques while providing clear instruction and guidance, then conducted exercising drills to improve flexibility, stamina and strength of each player.
