Primary Youth Counselor/Correctional Officer

  • As an individual working for the DOC my obligations are to provide transitional support services to youth needing help with the transition from placement back into the community. As a Primary I worked directly with all residents. However, having 1 to 3 primary residents under my supervision, support, and guidance while following their individual treatment plan. We offered the opportunity to earn incentives by meeting program expectations and making progress on their individual case plan goals. As staff I prioritized the needs of each resident based on the results of their own initial screening process.
  • Managed a floor of 17 boys with a team of three staff.
  • Writing bi weekly paperwork reviewing my primary residents behaviors, progress in the program, and areas of growth.
  • Being present where needed, ready to work to meet responsibilities, including recognizing high stress level situations as well as how to defuse them and ready if they become physical.
  • Maintain the safety and security of the JDC its residents and staff.
  • Effective communication with residents, co-workers, administration, parents and professionals. (Examples: Law enforcement, Probation Officers, Social Workers, Attorneys, Chemical Dependency Counselors, school and Guardian Ad Litems)

  • As a Primary Youth Counselor I developed, and maintained safe, healthy, therapeutic relationships with residents in order to meet the specialized needs of the girls. I as a Primary worked in conjunction with the Case Managers, Social workers, Probation officer, and other professionals to implement the Individual Treatment Plans of my 1 to 4 primary residents within the house. This includes writing in daily goals and tracking the progress of my assigned residents as they move throughout the program. I as well as other Primary Youth Counselors co-facilitate groups on topics geared to address the girls' needs and life stressors. As well as working in collaboration to support and educate other staff on the specific needs of the girls.
  • Managed a floor of 22 girls with two to three staff per wing of the building.
