Work History

NPI SMT Process Engineering Technician

Flex
Austin, TX
02.2023 - Current
  • Provide direct NPI process engineering support for SMT manufacturing in a fast-paced, high-mix environment, with a primary focus on reflow performance, solder joint integrity, and yield stabilization.
  • Support NPI builds from first article through production ramp, ensuring SMT processes meet quality, yield, and reliability targets.
  • Partner with Process, Manufacturing, and Quality Engineers to debug solder-related failures during early builds and pilot runs.
  • Assist in defining process windows for solder paste printing, placement, and reflow during NPI introduction.
  • Support ECOs and approved process changes, ensuring controlled implementation on the production floor.
  • Act as a key technical resource for reflow oven setup, profiling, and optimization across multiple product types.
  • Analyze SPI data, AOI findings, and defect trends to identify contributors to solder defects including: Insufficient / excessive solder, BGA voiding, Opens, shorts, bridging, and tombstoning.
  • Drive root cause investigations across the full SMT stack (stencil, paste, placement, reflow), avoiding single-variable fixes.
  • Support corrective actions including profile tuning, stencil adjustments, print parameter optimization, and material feedback.
  • Program, debug, and optimize SMT equipment including: Solder Paste Printers, SPI, Pick-and-Place, Reflow Ovens, Dispense Systems.
  • Serve as an on-floor process engineering point of contact, responding to real-time line issues impacting yield and throughput.
  • Perform thermal profiling for BGA rework and component-level repair, feeding lessons learned back into upstream process improvements.
  • Create and maintain SOPs, work instructions, and standardized processes to support repeatable NPI execution.
  • Train technicians and operators on SMT process fundamentals, defect recognition, and equipment operation.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts by translating engineering intent into practical floor-level execution.
  • Routinely take on responsibilities beyond technician scope, demonstrating readiness for Process Engineer ownership.
  • Proactively learn new systems, equipment capabilities, and process methodologies to strengthen NPI execution.
