This role is expected to be an influential leader of the EH&S culture at the pilot plants. To this end, they will promote a positive and constructive environment where everyone feels comfortable raising and addressing a safety concern. They should also be very knowledgeable of Life Critical Standards (LCSs) and Loss Prevention Principles (LPPs) and should encourage everyone at the pilot plants to strive for perfection in these with as much efficiency as possible.
The Pilot Plant Technologist Shift Lead at B-3800 pilot plant provides an on-schedule coach/mentor with strong process knowledge, interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills to assist the plants schedule in aligning activities with business/functional objectives and the teams’ achievement of goals. The person fulfilling this role must see himself/herself as a service provider to his/her schedule and is looked upon as a resource by team members. The Pilot Plant Technologist (Shift Lead) should be trusted by team members and lead from a position of influence versus a position of authority.
o Proactively develops, leads, and assigns personnel in responding to Immediate Response Situations.
o Leads immediate response drills to prepare personnel utilizing defined and developed scenarios to cover a wide variety of potential scenarios.
o Ensures that the Immediate Response work process is followed during an Immediate Response situation and Immediate Response Drills
o Conducts preliminary root cause investigations on shift at the time of an incident, documents in Logbook, and communicates to staff for formal RCI completion.
o Works with Technical Advisor to develop yearly IRL drill scenarios.
· Shift People Systems Focal Point - The intent of this role is to provide a coach/mentor on shift to assist members of the shift team with Dow's People Systems. Key responsibilities include:
o Facilitates conflict resolution between people/shifts. Any conflict that cannot be resolved will be escalated to the Operations Leader.
o Coaches shift team members on People Systems and policies that apply to them
o Evaluates and contributes to balancing experience between shifts.
o Facilitates team feedback on performance appraisals.
o Coaches and develops Process Technicians for Sr. Tech role.
o Ensures area technicians know the right way to do the work (as defined by department policy, job procedures, standards, and work processes).
o Acts as a role model by exhibiting personal leadership and accountability.
o Creates optimism and trust on schedule
o Works with Operation Leader on developing their shifts personal skills.
· Shift Activity Coordinator - In this role, Shift leads will work as on-shift activity coordinators. Key responsibilities include:
o Coordinates activities for the team, and instructing other team members on the use of the Master Task List database (inputting and extracting tasks)
o Helps the team make daily assignments to limit confusion and clarify expectations.
o Work with Operations Leader, Technical Advisor and the maintenance team during shutdowns to coordinate the operation shutdown schedule and follow large projects.
· Shift Trainer - In this role, Shift Leads will ensure technicians are successfully trained on their shift. Key responsibilities include:
o Leading on-shift training, either by acting as the on-shift trainer or delegating to experienced technicians on shift.
o Tracking process technician’s training progression and escalating any concerns to the Training Coordinator.
o Contributing to identifying additional training needs for their shift.
Initiative - Ensures that plant is conducting research to plan and if not, in develops and documents plan to close gaps
· Ensure all work that needs to get done for the day is being addressed in a timely manner
· Stimulates others to accept new ideas and process improvements
· Encourages plant personnel to develop tools or process improvements which streamline work flow and improve efficiency
· Understands Unplanned Event or Immediate Response trigger criteria and initiates/facilitates the process when triggers are met
Leadership - Acts as the first-line Technical Advisor and Operations Leader on-shift
· Acts as the communication focal point for their respective schedule
· Appropriately represents their schedule's perspective concerning plant issues
· Understands, communicates and supports business, site and PSPH R&D Pilot plant goals and objectives, and works with their schedule to stay aligned to them

Work Process Discipline - · Ensures that the appropriate work processes are followed including the use of eSWP and Manage Production Tools (OPD, Aspen Explorer)
· Ensures that their schedule follows and improves the plant's operating discipline, including Procedure use, detailed rounds, Process Automation policy, and active review of Active Alarms/Instruments in Manual.
· Ensures processes for Attendance / Schedule Mgmt / Coverage are followed and escalate issues as necessary
· Provides feedback and coaching to plant personnel when the appropriate work processes are not followed
