I started my work career as a dishwasher at the Hilton hotel. Over a couple years i got interested in cooking/prep work and I finally got placed in a line cook position. I did line cook for about 6 months to a year. Then I heard about havco wood products and my uncle worked there and he told me about it so I applied. Better paying job for me at the time and then I got the job and I stayed at havco for about 4 years. During those first 4 years I learned everything on the roughend. Then I left havco for Rockford manufacturing cause it was closer to home so I couldn’t pass that up. I stayed there for a year to a year and a half and enjoyed my time there but overtime I felt the company wasn’t doing good and wanted more job security and then I left Rockford manufacturing and went back to havco wood products and been there ever since. I’ll be back for 5 years in July.
Defect sawyer: as a defect sawyer I get wood that has been given to me by a material handler and I look over the stick and from my training I cut out any defect that wouldn’t pass quality and send the good wood to our glueline
I have a production number I have to hit everyday. I’m only allowed so much quality(bad sticks) and so much yield(good wood thrown away) normal production is around 15,500 feet, on a normal day I’m sawing around 20k per day.
We work in a team of 14 sawyers and we all work together to keep our glueline full of wood and our gluelines have to hit a certain number everyday as well.
