Joshua Miller

I am an aspiring dentist with a strong belief in serving one's community. Becoming a part of the NHSC program will allow me to provide care to individuals who have traditionally experienced limited access to dental care. As a fluent Spanish speaker who has lived and traveled extensively in Latin America, and who is married to a wife of Salvadoran and Mexican descent, I am aware of the challenges that certain minority groups face with regards to obtaining equal access to care. I am hopeful that joining NHSC will provide me with a greater opportunity and platform to work on behalf of these groups and help close the healthcare gap in my community.

• Participated in over 200 hours of community service during my undergraduate and post-graduate college years.
• Served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Concepcion, Chile, from 2016-2018, wherein I provided constant service to the community. Chopped firewood for the elderly, painted homes, and aided multiple families in moving.
• In 2019, served as a youth group leader at an international youth conference in Tijuana, Mexico; aided in building homes for impoverished families in Tijuana.
• From 2018-present, I have provided free English tutoring to acquaintances from Latin America, specifically Chile, Colombia, and Mexico.
• In August 2021 and 2022, served as a Spanish translator at Roseman University's community outreach event, Back to School Brush-Up, helping to improve the oral literacy of Spanish-speaking children and families in the underserved communities in the Salt Lake Valley.
• In February 2023, served as both a Spanish translator and dental provider at Roseman's Give Kids a Smile event, providing free dental screenings and cleanings to children in surrounding underserved areas.
• In July 2024, my wife, father, and I will travel to Antigua, Guatemala, to provide humanitarian service through dentistry as part of the charitable organization, Common Hope. We had previously scheduled this trip in 2020 and 2021, but had to cancel plans due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
