Work History

Full-time Employee

Mathews County School Board
06.2020 - Current
  • Responsible for uptime and service for about 1000 people with aa team of 2 full-timers and 1 part-time worker.
  • This is also when my boss left for retirement, and I had to adjust to a new technology director's methods
  • Skilled at working independently and collaboratively in team environment.
  • Delivered services to customer locations within specific timeframes.
  • Self-motivated, with a strong sense of personal responsibility.
  • Became a full member of the staff, and started being held responsible for the integrity of our infrastructure and expected to operate completely independently for multiple days at a time without losing focus or growing complacent
  • I was expected to understand nuances of education here was well, as for the first time I had to help students of all age, many of whom required a gentle hand, many of whom simply wished me harm
  • Experienced in first-time setup of Cisco Switches and maintenance
  • Experienced in deploying scripts and policies using AD
  • I also was held to secrecy on many confidential topics, including sensitive student information, SOL Testing, and staff information
  • I was also tasked with investigating issues and doing a fair bit of detective work - Children love to steal technology, and figuring out who stole what wasn’t just my job, it was a necessity, given our budget being the lowest of all the departments.

Part-time Employee

Mathews County School Board
11.2016 - 06.2020
  • Despite having learned allot about IT in my time as a volunteer, this is the first time I was held to a standard of responsibility
  • When I was a volunteer, I would always be able to leave when it was the end of the day, but starting at this position, I was expected to finish a job before leaving
  • I was expected, as a 14-year-old boy, to instruct teachers and staff and to troubleshoot important issues hindering the learning environment, with very real issues
  • During emergencies, I would actually be removed from class to help troubleshoot network outages and the like
  • Here I learned what the term work ethic meant, and I was also tasked with managing the other part-timers and volunteers
  • My boss at this job was quite strict, and when he told me I’d be managing the others, the first thing he told me is that anything that happened under my supervision was my responsibility
  • This instilled in me an understanding of the necessity of the command structure, and of caution.

Volunteer

Mathews County School Board
07.2014 - 11.2016
  • Initially, my responsibilities simply included simple tasks, like taking out the trash, wrapping ethernet cables, and basic network and program troubleshooting
  • However, as I continued with my volunteer position, my role expanded to that of something of a volunteer manager and instructor
  • I was tasked with helping new volunteers learn about technology, and I was no longer simply practicing the craft; I was teaching it
  • Furthermore, it helped me transition into longer working hours into my part-time position
  • My skills were also honed at the edge here, as I was often tasked with fixing things that I had no knowledge of at the time.
  • Facilitated community outreach to expand participation and support.
