
I started working as a laboratory assistant after COVID and took a pause in my education, with just one semester left to finish my Bachelor's in Sports Biology. This year I decided to enroll and finish my education. I am currently taking a research methods for health sciences course and became very interested in research. Over the years, I have gained a lot of technical experience and strong analytical abilities in healthcare settings.
1. Performs computer accessioning and proper specimen labeling, insuring specimen integrity.
2. Assists Pathology Residents and Pathologists as needed in Frozen Section & Gross Room as needed.
3. Performs routine Histology procedures such as embedding and grossing.
4. Initiates work procedures and performs all quality control, instrument maintenance & documentation required by accrediting agencies.
5. Communicates effectively and appropriately with coworkers, pathology residents & pathologists to assure the quality & integrity of the service.
6. Maintain a safe environment for one's self and coworkers to comply with all regulatory agencies & with hospital's & Laboratory's Safety Programs.
7. Assists in maintaining section's inventory to ensure proper levels of reagents, controls and disposables.
8. Participates in Laboratory Performance Improvement Program.
9. Teaches and trains new employees, students and Pathology Residents.
10. Fulfills all compliance responsibilities related to the position.
11. Performs other duties as assigned.
1. Preanalytical processing, accessioned, and scanned all samples received through the pneumatic tube system.
2. Prepared specimens to send to appropriate reference laboratories.
3. Performed waived and moderate complexity testing (urinalysis, HCG testing, COVID testing, etc.)
4. Assisted in inventory control and management.
5. Specimen storage and retrieval.
6. Performed maintenance required by laboratory.
1. Maintained daily operations of the front end automation system (MPA) i.e. loading caps, aliquot tubes and other system function checks determined. Loaded specimens received on the MPA and delivered samples to appropriate section(s) when applicable.
2. Ensured specimen integrity while performing specimen accessioning/ordering in the LIS and processing using established handling, labeling and processing procedures.
3. Prepared control material, performed preventive maintenance (i.e. thermometer calibration etc.), completed maintenance logs and performed instrument quality control, oversaw refrigerator and freezer temperature recording, etc.
4. Answered phones and insured customer satisfaction. Added on additional test requests when applicable following laboratory protocol for Add-On Requests.
5. Maintained reagent inventory, labeled and stored reagents appropriately.
6. Answered the pneumatic tube system. Filed specimens and discarded specimen at proper intervals.
7. Restocked supplies in work area as needed.
8. Communicated well with other staff members to ensure excellent customer service and appropriate follow-up.
9. Fulfilled all compliance responsibilities related to the position.
1. Received COVID specimens from outpatient testing locations.
2. Ensured specimen integrity, and scanned all tests according to the electronic health record system.
3. Registered patient demographics as needed for last-minute add-on testing.
4. Worked with technicans to load all samples for PCR testing.
5. Maintained and restocked sections as needed.
