My first semester at Wright State, I joined Love Your Melon on campus. Love Your Melon is an organization bringing awareness, volunteering and raising funds for childhood cancer. I participated in a swab drive for bone marrow donation shortly after I joined. Fortunately, a few months later, I received a call that I had matched with an infant with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. I went through a series of tests, physical exams in preparation for surgical donation. During covid, elective surgeries were no longer allowed and we made the switch to peripherally donation. Today, Mighty Mads is 6 years old. This past summer, I had the pleasure of celebrating his 5 years of clean bone marrow biopsies and remission success. Mads is one of the greatest things that has ever happed to me, and proves that opportunities truly are once in a lifetime. Now, I am a spokesperson for DKMS and Be the Match, where we had the opportunity to share our donation story on multiple news stations from Cincinnati all the way to California, 26 states and counting! Along with universities to encourage young students to be bigger than themselves and be a part of Be The Match.
