Obligate Grassland Bird Internship at The Wilds

- Studying reclaimed surface mines that have been shown to provide suitable nesting habitat for a variety of obligate grassland bird species. However, few studies have attempted to monitor grassland bird population trends over several years.
- My team and I would go to point count locations all over the Wilds and count how many varieties of birds and bird species were present at each point count location.
- The study area used in this research was made up of 26 study points at three sections consisting of The Wilds, a conservation center and non-profit safari park in Cumberland, Ohio. This area is an unclaimed surface mine consisting of 4,047 hectares (or 10,000 acres) of land. The three sections studied were Zion Ridge, the Southern Sector, and the Bison Pen.
- 26 points were used to collect data for our study. With each point, we used a measuring tape to measure out a 15-meter radius circle on the point, measured the heights of each shrub with a meter stick, and wrote that data down. With this new year's data, we use it to compare from 2019.
- We will be presenting our research data this April 2025, at the Ohio Academy of Science.
