Accomplishments

  • Established second behavioral health spirituality group, in response to Veterans' requests, and attendance at both sessions doubled, making the spirituality groups the largest chaplain inpatient or outpatient group held in WJB Dorn VAMC.
  • Consistently exceeded the National VA Chaplain's standard for spiritual encounters, with a total of 25,256 encounters over six fiscal years, an average of 4,209 per year, plus 408 for two months of the previous fiscal year I started.
  • Effective planning of WJB Dorn VAMC's Pastoral Care Conference resulted in Staff Chaplains educating community churches to partner with the VA to meet the spiritual and healthcare needs of Veterans and their family members. All participants responded positively, and requested additional resources.
  • Member of the Dorn VA Clay Hunt Outreach Team, which implements the Congressional Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for Veterans Act, Section 5. In accordance with the Act, worked with the team to create community peer support networks to increase access to mental health services for transitioning and at-risk Veterans. Recruited Project Josiah, a faith-based combat support group, as peer support counselors with Clay Hunt.
  • Conducted briefing, "Military Culture, Transition to Civilian Life, Potential Stressors and Problems and VA Resources," for the Clay Hunt Team at the VA Mental Health Summit for 63 community service organizations and 135 participants. Veterans approached and thanked me after the presentation, requesting counseling.
  • Presented for the Clay Hunt Team at the Big Red Barn, a non-profit Active Duty and Veterans' community organization, educating Veterans and the community on Veterans' behavioral health issues, transition, and VA resources.

  • Served as an assistant editor of the "Spirit of the Chaplaincy" newsletter.
  • Served as Subcommittee Chair for the VA National Chaplain Center's History Program, appointed by VA Chaplain Field Advisory Committee (FAC) to develop a template for each chaplain service to record and submit their histories for publication.
  • The FAC was "so impressed" with the template that I was selected as Lead Editor of the editorial board for the VA Chaplain's History (Published January 2016).
  • As Lead Editor for the VA National Chaplain Center's History Program, responsible for assisting Veterans Integrated Service Networks (VISNs) I, II, and III, to complete individual histories; editing and consolidating VISNs into chapters, and working with Chaplain Juliana Lesher, Chief of Chaplain Service, VA FAC Audie L. Murphy VAMC, San Antonio, Texas, to combine chapters into one consolidated publication.
  • Also, the FAC selected and published the Dedication I wrote for the VA Chaplain's History.
  • Submitted Devotional, "Help Us to Listen," based on 1Samuel 3:8-10, which was selected and published in Guideposts.

  • "Military Culture, Transition to Civilian Life, Potential Stressors and Problems and VA Resources," at the VA Mental Health Summit for 63 community service organizations and 135 participants, 2016.
  • "Preserving Purpose, Maintaining Hope--Keeping the Wolves of Cynicism and Burn-out at Bay," WJB Dorn VAMC In-Patient Mental Health Staff in 2015 and 2017 for WJB Dorn VAMC social workers, and, via teleconference, two CBOCs.   • Volunteer from February 2007-December 2009 at Command Component-Land Madrid, Spain and Daumarie Chapel, Chievres, Belgium, providing religious support, teaching adult and middle Sunday School, preaching and leading worship when supervisor was away on retreat or visiting personnel at other duty stations.

  • Reading books, including, but not limited to: treating addiction and substance abuse, such as Clean: Ending Addiction and Overcoming America's Greatest Tragedy, by David Sheff, a critically acclaimed examination of the scientific causes of substance abuse and the best medical practices for effective treatment. Based on this study, incorporated the effective practice of "motivational interviewing" into my spiritual care of patients struggling with substance abuse;
  • Complications, A Sugeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science, by Atul Gawande.
  • When Breath Becomes Air, by Paul Kalanithi, the memoir of a young neurosurgeon who has terminal cancer.
  • Daily Studies of Scripture, focusing on in-depth study of a specific Biblical book. (Completed a study of Galatians, and currently translating and interpreting the Gospel of Matthew and Psalms.)
