Karen Champagne

Executive Assistant
Little Rock, AR

Summary

I worked for Dillard Store Services, Inc. in the IT department for 35 years and 8 months. I recently retired in November of 2022. I loved my job and my coworkers, I just got tired of the driving back and forth to Little Rock every day. At Dillard's there was no working from home, you had to be in the office every day, even during the Pandemic, I was in the office. This was probably the only time that some of the employees were able to work remote because of the guidelines.

When I started at Dillard's, I worked for 2 Directors, and then promoted to Executive Asst. to the VP & CIO. In this position I have worked for 5 different Vice Presidents, and the last one was our CIO and VP of Global Supply Chain. The Supply Chain opened up another world besides IT.

Before Dillard's I worked for Little Rock Hematology Oncology Associates. I was the Receptionist for 4 1/2 years before I resigned and went to Dillard's. I loved my job working with my co-workers and our patients. Some of the patients and families you really became close. At that time, cancer treatment was not as successful as it is today. The only reason for me leaving, was there was no advancement, unless I went to school to become a nurse. I was a single parent raising 4 children and did not feel I could balance, raising a family, school, and full time work. I will always regret that I could not have found a way to go to school for nursing. That was always my dream job. ,

Work History

Executive Asst. to CIO & VP Global Supply Chain

Dillard's Store Systems, Inc.
Little Rock, AR
1987 - 2022

As the Executive Assistant, you will wear many hats. There were over 400 in our IT department, so you interacted with a lot of employees on a daily basis. Some just needing someone that would listen to problems with work, some advice on personal issues, and some asking questions regarding policies and procedures.

I dealt with all of the paperwork for exiting employees, making sure all security had been removed, credit cards turned in and canceled, and if they were able to return to the building.

I processed all of the IT invoices on a monthly basis, scheduled airline, hotels for foreign and domestic trips. I was responsible for booking education and conferences along with the travel. I scheduled travel for inventory 2- 4 times a year, booking travel, making sure their hotel's were paid and obtaining per diem before they traveled. On their return, entering out of pocket expenses for reimbursement. I answered the phone, took messages, tried to solve any issues I knew I could take care of. I assisted vendors with any problems they had, took care of the mail for the VP, answered incoming and outgoing correspondence. I helped organized parties for our IT group, i.e. Christmas lunch, Thanksgiving lunch. For different holidays, we would make sure we celebrated with cookies, candy, ice cream to keep morale up.

On the Supply Chain side, I would book their education, conferences, travel to DC's just like I did for I.T. I did process some of their billing, but most of the purchases were purchased using purchase orders. This way we paid the invoices on a 60 day term instead of 45. I was in charge of reissuing 4 series gift cards that were not secure. A customer would send in the gift card and I would research to make sure fraud had not already taken place and issue a secured card for the customer to use on on-line purchases or purchases in the store. During Covid, everyone decided to clean out drawers, so there were a lot of cards coming in for replacement.

I was responsible for booking conference rooms for weekly or spur of the moment meetings for the VP.
