I decided to become a teacher because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of the students that hold the future in their hands, as well as change the way that education is viewed in the eyes of a young student. Throughout my experience, I have learned that the most critical aspects of education involve the student, their success, and that treating each student as an individual gives them value and opportunity. I believe in creating an environment where students feel safe to share their thoughts or raise their hands; they feel as though they are valued and can grow physically, mentally, and emotionally.
As a teacher, my strongest qualities are adaptability, empathy, patience, respectfulness, and collaboration. I can adapt to the needs of the students and am aware that a lesson plan on paper does not determine how the day will always go. I can understand my students' emotions and why they may be feeling them and use that to help them learn better. I have patience with students and know that some students need more time or instruction to understand things than others. I am also aware that things do not always go as planned, and sometimes, figuring out how to solve that also takes time. My relationships with my students or cooperating teachers have always been respectful, and I give respect to all of those around me, including my students, as I do not know their struggles and how their lives have gone outside of school. I am prepared to meet students as who they are, form no bias towards them, understand their stories, and use them to understand my students better. I have learned to prepare for the things in the classroom that we may not believe would happen but do and how to prepare for lessons and meetings that come along with teaching.
