Juvenile Court Counselor

Multnomah County Department Of Community Justice
Portland

  • Juvenile Court Counselor working with the adjudication team. I work with youth and families who formally enter the juvenile system. Assess and evaluate each youth and family to address their needs, with a balance to address the allegations the youth commits. While working in adjudication, I have been afforded the privilege of working as Lead Juvenile Court Counselor.
  • I was a member of the Family Service Unit for eight years. We work together, integrating systems within our own team, on a daily basis. We work with Adult Probation and the Department of Human Services to develop the best case management plan for the families who are on supervision and connected to different services in the system. A lead Juvenile Court Counselor for about the last four years.
  • I worked on the female gender team caseload and also supervised female clients while working at the family service unit. I gained extensive knowledge working with Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) youth. I supervised young ladies who were CSEC victims. These youths present multiple issues with trauma that could be displayed as behavior. Some of these youths survive and become productive citizens. Some are convinced that their exploitation had value for them by filling some roles that were vacated by parents.
  • I worked as the lead Juvenile Court Counselor in the Gang Resource Intervention Team and the Family Service Unit. I carried a gang-specific caseload while working in both of these units. The combined time of working in both of these units is fifteen years. While working on both of these teams, as described in question number one, the goal was to reduce the impact of gang behavior in the community. Gang-affected families present as high need and high risk. The families often needed basic elements of living and existing in their community. The families were presented with poverty, a lack of education, extreme high-risk behavior, and a lack of job skills. As of the department, we would help fulfill basic service needs of the families, and engage and motivate parents to find work, go back to school, and develop a skill.
