Working as a social worker in at both
Linden Oaks Hospital (LOH) and Edwards Emergency Department (ED) provided me an invaluable opportunity to learn how a major hospital system functions, as well as to be a patient advocate working with insurance companies to coordinate care. My role at LOH was to provide free level of care (LOC) assessments to determine not only why someone needs mental health treatment, but also accurately determine what LOC will best help patients on their treatment journey.
Stateville’s Northern Reception Center (NRC) is a maximum security prison under the care of Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC). My job was to assess and triage mental health services for inmates under the care of IDOC. I also responded to and provided therapeutic intervention for crisis calls from inmates, and partook in daily assessments for inmate who were on crisis watch. I provided comprehensive diagnostic evaluations for inmates requiring increased mental health services, and assisted in determining inpatient and residential treatment for severely mentally ill inmates. I was also a liaison with correctional staff for coordination of care.
Elgin Mental Health Center (EMHC) is an inpatient medium security psychiatric hospital that provides treatment for forensic patients who are not guilty by reason of insanity or are unfit to stand trial. My job was to provide one on one counseling to patients, lead and co-lead treatment groups, keep up to date and well documented court reports, treatment plans, progress notes, goals, and work together with the treatment team. I worked in very high stress and high impact situations while at Elgin, and was able to learn the valuable experiences of how to manage, coordinate, and be a helpful part of the team during crisis situations.
