Research

  • Don't Hold Your Breath: Implementation of "Bedside Wake Up and Breathe" Handoff in Improving Compliance with Spontaneous Awakening (SAT) and Breathing Trials (SBT), 03/01/16, 03/31/17, Amir Galini, After adopting the ABCDEF bundle in 2015, the ICU team at Orange Regional Medical Center (ORMC), Middletown, NY implemented a "Bedside Wake Up and Breathe" handoff protocol in June 2016 to improve bundle compliance. The protocol required respiratory therapists to assess the need for, and perform if indicated, standard SATs and SBTs. The overall aim of the study was to have a structured protocol that optimized the ABCDEF bundle, enhancing early weaning of mechanically ventilated patients and decreasing ICU length of stay at Orange Regional Medical Center. Responsibilities included: Co-lead investigator, formatting and designing project concept, training fellow student researchers, performing research, calculating results.
  • Use of Ultrasound in Diagnosing Testicular Torsion in Pediatric Patients Presenting with Abdominal Pain, 09/01/17, 12/31/17, Matt Moore, The Emergency Department protocol to use ultrasound tests for every patient presenting with abdominal pain to rule out testicular torsion has been implemented for over three years at ORMC. The aim of this study is to discover the rates of missed testicular torsion before and after the implementation of the protocol. Responsibilities included: Data collection and analysis.
  • The Impact of the Dense Breast Notification Law on Patterns of Screening in a Rural Population in New York, 01/01/18, 04/30/18, High breast density is recognized as an independent risk factor for the development of breast cancer. With increasing age, breast density decreases. Mammograms without additional imaging modalities have the potential to not adequately detect breast cancer in those patients with dense breasts. Therefore, in 2013 and in 2017, the state of New York passed legislature on the issue of screening in women with dense breasts. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether screening practices have changed since the implementation of the "dense breast law" and whether that change has resulted in modification in clinical intervention. Responsibilities included: Data collection and analysis.
