Growing up in a family of educators, teaching has been in my blood. When I was five years old in Mrs. Berg’s kindergarten classroom at Cimarron Elementary, I decided teaching would be my path and I did not waiver from it. After twelve years in Katy ISD and three and a half years at Baylor, I pursued my master’s degree. In deciding what to pursue, I pondered on my gifts. Growing up in church my whole life, I had been told to learn my gifts and use them in my purpose in life. Alfred Adler, a counseling theorist said we must learn our purpose and then figure out how to give it away. My purpose in life it to use my gifts of empathy, listening, being a problem solver and encourager to help people. I believe I am pursuing a purpose that is larger than myself. With joy and gladness, I have served as the counselor in Katy ISD for 15 of those years. Each day is a joy for me to be at my school with my students. From guidance lessons and individual counseling to being the first person to greet them with a hug at breakfast duty to the “famous” person they see on the TV announcements, I find my job rewarding. I am here for a reason whether that is providing a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, advice to solve a problem, an encouraging hug, Christmas presents, school supplies, clothes on their back or shoes on their feet.
