In the 70s, homelessness was becoming a recognized community need. As a member of the Junior League, my committee of six women wrote a white paper on the growing awareness of this issue. Two of us approached an Episcopal priest who had notified the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese. Bishop Swig was aware of the void in his church in dealing with the homeless. As it turned out our white paper coincided with the creation of the Episcopal Sanctuary. Initially opened in the. Rapt of Grace Cathedral, it was a cover story in Time magazine as the first time in US history where a Cathedral opened its doors to the homeless. Today, it is the largest coed shelter for the Homeless currently housed in a former bath house. I remained involved for many years on the Board and at the shelter. During my 18 years in the League I volunteered at the shelter, fundraiser for non profits, mentored new members, and took on leadership roles in the organization. I joined the National Charity League (a mother daughter organization) to foster volunteerism for my daughter. We worked together in soup kitchens, aided paroled women when rejoined with their children; volunteered in reading to low income elementary school students. Later I joined the Women's Board of the Museum of CA. This is the fundraising arm of the museum. I co-chaired a section of the White Elephant Sale. This major fundraiser raised at least one million dollars each year for the museum. I feel strongly about volunteering for a community need to better someone's life, household or community.
