The patient care process begins with preparing patients' charts prior to their appointments. I obtain out-of-network labs or procedures and scan any found information into the chart. Upon arrival, I room the patient, take their vitals, and ask for more in-depth information regarding any symptoms. I aid in answering patient questions and calls, and work with the provider on other tasks that they need completed.
Over the course of the last nine years, I have volunteered with many camps and local high school teams. The age range for these camps spans from six to eighteen. The general goal for each camp is to help young athletes gain confidence on and off the court, and to prepare them for higher-level athletic environments. This is accomplished by honing in on skills, and running through drill sets.
Living in Porto, Portugal, for one season I played for a professional women's basketball team. The days began with individual workouts, and after that, I would help to train young students or run physical education courses with the school connected to the club. Our practices were later in the evening, so, in my spare time, I explored the surrounding cities and immersed myself in Portuguese culture.
I was involved in both the children's and pre-teen services. Leading up to these weekly events, I would plan a curriculum that revolved around teaching our students kindness, and how to form a strong community. With each week, I also ran the fellowship's Facebook page to spread the word about our services.
Interning for sports medicine allowed me to learn direct patient care skills, including cupping, wound care, scraping, physical therapy exercises, tapping, concussion testing, and more. These activities were taught and then directly administered to the student-athlete body throughout their respective seasons.
Over two years, I acquired 150 hours of shadowing experience in a reconstructive plastic surgery clinic. I watched clinical procedures, direct patient care interactions, and clinical staff responsibilities. I was often asked questions regarding anatomical knowledge and given lessons in between that focused on the specialties' practices.
University of California - Santa Cruz, class of 2023
While at the University of California, Santa Cruz, I played collegiate basketball. I was a four-year starter, a two-year captain, and hold the rebounding, double-double, and assists records for the program. With the athletics department, I was able to join a leadership program, the student athletic council, and intern with sports medicine.
Athletics also led to an NIL deal my junior year of college. I signed with a company to promote their rebounding machine and traveled to New Orleans and Houston to present the product at consecutive NCAA national championships.
Outside of athletics, I strongly valued other communities I had the opportunity to join. Through the Unitarian fellowship, I participated in many donation drives, with the Santa Cruz Free Clinic, I aided in the distribution of sanitary products, Narcan, and food to houseless encampments, and I also worked at a French bakery that traveled each weekend to different farmers markets. This wide array of adventures highlights that I am not one to shy away from unfamiliar experiences.
