I was appointed to the MICHR Summer Research Program 2023 and had the privilege of being mentored by the Principal Investigator of this project: Dr. Bradley Zebrack. The title of the project is Social Genomic Mechanisms of Health Disparities Among Adolescent & Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Survivors. This study identifies and defines functional genomic pathways through which current and past psychosocial and social environmental risk and resilience factors influence gene regulation in adolescents and young adults. This project's primary focus group is AYA Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cancer survivors between the age of 18-39. My project includes multidisciplinary interaction with Dr. Steven Cole and his social genomics and CTRA expression work. My responsibilities included social media recruitment, blood sample labeling, and organization of patient data.
I had the privilege of studying fragmented day-night cycles and gene expression under the supervision of Dr. Marie-Claire Boutrin. More specifically, our project focused on CLOCK and Bmal1 gene expression in the liver of P6 mice pups under fragmented day-night cycles. My responsibilities included running real-time PCR using various gene samples, analyzing and comparing gene expression of different organs, and extracting and preserving organs from mice subjects. I presented at an institutional research conference at the end of the project.
