I started my career as a certified surgical technologist 23 years ago, I have climbed my way up the CST ladder, becoming proficient in multiple specialties with an expertise in Robotic Surgery, Urology, Orthopedics, GYN/OB, and CVOR. As a preceptor and mentor for all Orthopedic Procedures which includes; Total joint replacement with and without computer navigation, Spines, Trauma, Total femurs, and orthopedic Reconstruction for oncology. To enhance my career, I trained and developed expertise in Robotic Surgery, Urology, and Cardiac/Thoracic Surgery, becoming a mentor in multiple service lines. Wanting to move to the next level, I furthered my education and became a Certified Surgical First Assistant, in this role I became proficient in all services, with a specialty in Robotics, Urology, OB/GYN and Orthopedics.
In 2006, I was elected to the Maine State Assembly of the Association of Surgical Technologists. since that time, I have held many positions, from a board of director, vice president, President and Treasurer. As a board member of the Maine State Assembly of the Association of Surgical Technologists (MESA). I have served on the Education and Training committee, where I have orchestrated annual Educational Conferences and Workshops, which includes Speakers, Vendors, and hands-on workshops for all Certified Surgical Technologists and Certified Surgical Assistants in the state of Maine. I have worked in conjunction with AORN (Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses) and CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution) to bring CE credits to all Surgical Staff members. During my career and time on board, I have developed a “CST Career Ladder Program” which Eastern Maine Medical Center implemented and because of this ladder, CSTs received a 15-20% pay increase and EMMC only hires Certified Surgical Technologists. I also executed “Surgical Technologists Recognition Week” which is now celebrated annually. As a member of the Maine State Assembly, I organized and facilitated a “Lottery Program” at Eastern Maine Medical Center for Certified Surgical Technologists to attend National AST conferences yearly, with most of their expenses covered by the hospital. My last accomplishment was to create a Certified Surgical Assistant position and program, which allows level five CSTs to further their careers by becoming certified surgical first assistants. Two CSTs are now elected yearly to attend this successful CFA program with all expenses being covered by the hospital and local hospitals now employee Certified Surgical First Assistants.
After achieving this goal, I decided to take my career one step further, by applying 23 years of Operating Room Experience on the road, traveling across the county as a Certified Surgical Technologist and Certified Surgical Assistant. During my travels, I have had the pleasure of working with multiple Surgeons, Residents, teaching and mentoring multiple Surgical Technicians and Surgical First Assistants all over the country.
In August of 2020, I accepted a full-time position with Maine Medical Center as a Certified Surgical First Assistant and was granted privileges in all services. I have had the pleasure of precepting staff members, students including residents in multiple services lines. In April of 2021, I was chosen to assist in the first robot-assisted radical nephrectomy with IVC thrombectomy in the state of Maine and went on to co-author an article which was published in the September issue of The Surgical Technologist Magazine. I am very passionate and proud to be a CST/CSFA, and volunteer may time and experience every day to teach and mentor others healthcare professionals.
