Work History

Registered Nurse

SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital
08.1990 - Current

I started at St. Mary's as a Certified Nursing Assistant while I worked my way through nursing school on the Geriatrics/Oncology unit (the old 6 West) and continued to work there after I graduated for 4 more years. There I worked with geriatric patients with multiple diagnoses ranging from GI to Respiratory, CHF and COPD. I also administered chemotherapy and cared for the dying patient and their families. In 1997 I transferred to Family Care Suites caring for antepartum, postpartum, newborns and GYN patients. There I perform head to toe assessments on new moms and babies, post surgical care following Cesarean deliveries and GYN surgeries and caring for the high risk antepartum. Teaching patients and their families is a big part of what I do and something I take pride in. In 2014 I transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to care for infants requiring special care. In 2015 I transferred back to Family Care Suites.

During this time, I have learned that excellent assessment skills and providing high quality, evidenced base care is key as well as powerful communication skills to collaborate with physicians and multidisciplinary team members. I am a preceptor, training and mentoring new nurses to our unit, contributing to a positive work environment and high-quality patient care. I am also on the Safety committee that completes Joint Commission tracer forms monthly to assure that our unit is compliant. I have great experience with the EPIC software and complete monthly chart reviews. I have served as a charge nurse, Point of Care representative, I have served 3 terms on the Shared Governance Council and one term on the Housewide Education Council. I have been a NRP educator. I believe that, above all else, teamwork is a must! I work in an environment that brings me into contact with a wide variety of people, all socioeconomic groups, where empathy and acceptance is a must!
