  • 1992-Med-Surg: began my career with 2 years as a bedside nurse and also charge nurse on this unit. The vast majority of the patients had your typical ailments affecting most hospitalized patients including diabetes, hypertension, cancer, infections and such.
  • 1994-Telemetry Unit: monitoring and assessing the patient, their lab values, and looking for change in status during that crucial period after and MI or cardiac issue. Also monitored post cardiac-catheterization patients. Interaction between physicians and family was an important role in this setting where the family needs education regarding the testing and various procedures that may be required.
  • 1996-Cardiothoracic ICU: continuous care and monitoring of the post open heart and lung patient; during the critical 48 hr. post surgical period, intra-aortic balloon pump, arterial and Swan Ganz catheters, ventilator assisted, titration of cardiac drips to maintain optimal hemodynamic status.
  • 1998-Burn ICU: this position involved taking care of the critically ill adult and pediatric patient following a traumatic burn, smoke inhalation, and/or carbon monoxide poisoning. Wound care of not only burns, but non-healing surgical and other wounds requiring hyperbaric treatments, wound vacs, skin grafts, flaps, etc. Surgical wound care, staple removal, monitoring for compartment syndrome, pulses and venous/arterial circulations. Pulmonary care for the ventilated smoke damaged lungs. Patient and family teaching is extensive for the burn victim due to the nature of the injury which can require lifelong surgeries, physical therapy, and pain management, as well as the emotional toll that these disfigurements can have on an individual.
