  • YPEL3 Growth Inhibition in Cancer Cells

  • The YPEL3 gene is known to cause cellular senescence and the expression of this gene was measured by determining the ability of fibroblast cells to go into senescence after knockdown of other proteins thought to be related to its regulation using RNAi. The purpose was to determine what proteins are involved in regulation of this gene and if they were targets for future therapy in cancerous cells.

Service & Leadership

Journal Club Coordinator 2019-2020

  • I organized and coordinated journal club for 30 anesthesia residents and 20 attending anesthesiologists. My duties included contacting representatives to sponsor journal club, securing a journal club location, and determining which residents would present at journal club as well as identifying interesting articles to discuss.

Hispanic Festival Health Screening Volunteer 2014

  • Dayton, Ohio is home to a yearly Hispanic festival and I participated in setting up a booth to provide some basic screening for diabetes and hypertension for patrons who attended the festival. We performed blood pressure readings and blood glucose testing and invited those with elevated glucose levels and blood pressures to be seen in the free clinic where many of our school staff and students volunteer.

Social Chair Spanish Club 2013-2014

  • Elected by members of the Spanish Club, I organized fundraising and social events to raise money for our School of Medicine Spanish club. The goal of our club was to expand our knowledge of medical Spanish to better serve the Hispanic patient population. One of the larger events that I organized was a pancake breakfast held on El Dia de Los Muertos (a Spanish holiday), which hosted approximately 100-120 people.

Hospice Volunteer 2013

  • I spent time with a social worker during several home visits to families receiving Hospice care to observe the services that they offer and also to be available to support the families and patients in any way that they needed. The goal was to be more comfortable with end of life care and understanding the difficulties that accompany this experience. I also sat in on meetings that were held with the physician and nurses where the care of the geriatric patients was discussed and I learned valuable information about end of life care.

Project Homecoming Volunteer 2013

  • I spent a week in New Orleans helping to rebuild a house for a woman who’s home was severely damaged during hurricane Katrina. I was part of a group of 5 medical students who were assigned to a house owned by a victim of hurricane Katrina. Together we were able to paint the interior and replace flooring in the woman’s home. We also cooked and cleaned for the group with which I was volunteering which included 60 volunteers all staying at one facility.

Student to Student Volunteer 2013-2014

  • Student to student is an organization in which members spend time giving presentations to local schools from elementary aged children to high school aged teenagers about health. The talks are catered to be age appropriate. For example, one topic we presented was about drug prevention in adolescents. One of my favorite talks is one that we give to 2nd and 3rd graders about nutrition using the myplate.gov model.

Anesthesiology Interest Group 2012-2016

  • President
  • Provided information about Anesthesiology from program directors and local Anesthesiologists. Participation in this group has been vital given that there is no anesthesiology residency program offered at my medical school and has really allowed for medical students to make connections with local anesthesiologists to explore this subspecialty.

Military Medicine Interest Group 2012-2016

  • Vice President
  • Our military medicine interest group includes all HPSP students from all four classes that attend Boonshoft School of Medicine as well as students who are interested in the HPSP program. We had meetings 2-3 times a year to pass knowledge of the military side of medical school to those in the classes below us. We also gather for our own match day in December and take a tour of WPAFB, which is located near our school.

Reach Out Volunteer 2012-2016

  • Reach out is a clinic located in downtown Dayton, OH that focuses on providing health care services for underserved individuals in the community and also those without insurance. Medical students frequently volunteer here to gain early clinical experience and continue to volunteer throughout all four years of medical school. My experience at reach out has been invaluable, providing insight into the struggles that many patients face each day. I also had the opportunity to work with translators as the patient population is largely Hispanic and the clinic provides translation services so that the patients receive optimal care.
