I am currently an RTS II in the IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) section of ATFD (Alcohol, Tobacco, and Fuel Division) at the Illinois Department of Revenue. I field phone calls from taxpayers, and I answer IFTA related questions. I also process and reply to written correspondence from taxpayers. I process quarterly IFTA tax returns, I review IFTA refunds, I approve/deny IFTA applications for IFTA licenses, and I mail IFTA licenses and decals to taxpayers. Additionally, I assist with verifying and sending the information to the IFTA Clearinghouse on the monthly IFTA Transmittal. I assist with updating and maintaining the IFTA training manual. I work on other special projects as assigned by the supervisor.
When I began as an RTS I, I worked in Taxpayer Services at the Illinois Department of Revenue.
I received phone calls from taxpayers where I provided information and answered questions, coded the calls that I received, viewed taxpayer accounts, provided phone numbers and other contact information for units within IDOR and for other agencies, checked if returns had been filed, checked if returns had been accepted or rejected, searched for misapplied payments, wrote up work items to have misapplied payments moved to appropriate time periods, viewed if electronic or mailed payments had been received, located tax laws and regulations and referred taxpayers to them, mailed forms to taxpayers, provided inventory dates to taxpayers to indicate to them when correspondence was received and what correspondence was currently being worked on, viewed and processed information received via email that I then passed on to taxpayers, and assisted taxpayers with filling out various tax returns and making payments.
I used the Illinois Department of Revenue website (tax.illinois.gov) to locate regulations and policies. I assisted taxpayers by obtaining a support ID, with using the website mytax.illinois.gov so they could file tax returns and pay tax liabilities, and so they could keep track of their account activity and any letters they received.
