Work History

Owner/Operator of Sewistorical

Self-employed
01.2016 - 09.2022

Selected Accomplishments and Key Results:

Discovering a dearth of comprehensive courses on historical sewing, created three highly detailed online courses on historical dress, textiles, and costuming, available for public purchase and enrollment. Coached, mentored, and provided support for up to 20 students as they pursued their goals of making an accurate, authentic costume from scratch.

  • Researched and developed three comprehensive courses (covering advanced methods of sewing and clothing construction, selection of historically accurate textiles and patterns, and finishing techniques) to educate students on the social, economic, cultural, and historical context of each garment and ensemble.
  • Created historical costuming course materials, including all module content and videos to instruct over 20 individuals via online courses. Established a six-month online membership group for 30 people, and a self-paced course instructing 10 students.
  • Coached students through all modules, providing sewing and design instruction.
  • Produced presentations and interactive experiences to educate students on the sociocultural and political aspects of fashion history.
  • Coordinated monthly presentations, enlisting guest speakers to discuss historical fashion topics.
  • Mentored students on dress history and historical sewing with passion and enthusiasm, inspiring achievement and successful avocational pursuit.
  • Trained teens and young adults in private sewing lesson sessions.
  • Worked within budgets and timelines to create costumes for museums and theater.
  • Enrolled students from the U.S., Australia, Brazil, France, and the Netherlands.
  • Created and delivered over 10 webinars on dress history.
  • Researched and wrote over 30 modules of course content, including 75 specific lesson plans.
  • Contracted with James Madison's Montpelier (Orange County, VA) to recreate an exhibit item. Evaluated input from the curatorial department to sew and construct an 18th-century lady's cap and embroidered shawl. These items remain on display as a permanent feature.
  • Contracted with Tate House Museum (Portland, ME) to design and construct two 18th-century clothing ensembles within budget and under a tight deadline. These items remain on display or available in archival holding.
  • Acquired and cared for a growing collection of 80 historical garments via auctions and private sales, including dresses, underwear, corsets, hats, and accessories. Used for study, teaching, and public presentations.

Selected Accomplishments and Key Results:

Created and delivered an educational public presentation to over 30 museum guests. Utilized a digital microscope to examine and identify textile fibers. Cataloged and prepared storage for dozens of antique garments and textiles. Applied extensive experience in photography to professionally document textiles and write recommendations for the museum about how to photograph collections. Studying a specific set of rare and under-examined garments worn in 1761 C.E., uncovered new information about them, adding to the museum's catalog knowledge base.

  • Examined, interpreted, and researched antique clothing and accessories to produce public-facing visual displays and written reports.
  • Worked closely with curatorial staff, recommending methods for documentation procedures, cataloging, and storage protocols to ensure preservation of clothing and textile collections.
  • Conducted presentations and oral histories on specific items for community audiences and public programs.
  • Created novel typologies for object study, composed bibliographies including secondary literature, and analyzed quantitative and qualitative data.
