As burn-out is so rampant in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis, I believe self-care and personal time for reflection and calming, inspirational activities is essential in being at our best for our clients whenever possible. If we therapists are not fully invested, or fully rested, or off balance in any significant way, how can we do our job as needed for our clients?
Other than the inner rewards my spirit and my heart get to experience when a client makes significant progress, my three must-haves are a living wage (if the position is part time, then being given the ability to work a second job), BCBA supervision hours monthly allowing progression toward fulfilling fieldwork requirements to qualify to sit for the BCBA exam, and honest, transparent, respectful communication between everyone from the brand new BT to the owners of the company (or the highest appointed position). We can learn from anyone, regardless of education, experience, or status, so we all need to humble ourselves, and treat each other as equals in our quest to bring the highest quality ABA to every single client we are able to. We are all on the same team, working toward the same ultimate goal.
