Accomplishments

  • 1986 - Became officer in the Key West Jaycees, a junior Chamber of Commerce.
  • 1986 - Recognized locally as an Honorary Conch by Monroe County Mayor Wilhelmina Harvey.
  • 1992 - I got married, bought a second home and ran for political office. I was elected to the Monroe County School Board and I remain on that board to this day as the longest serving elected official in the Florida Keys.
  • 1993 - Joined the Rotary Club of Key West and I remain a member today.
  • 1995 - Joined Keys Federal Credit Union as a Supervisor Committee Member.
  • 1996 - Completed 96 hours coursework to become a certified board member (CBM) on the Monroe County School Board.
  • 1997 - Joined the board of Keys Federal Credit Union.
  • 1998 - Joined the board of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Elected Chairman of the Monroe County School Board. Elected to the board of the Florida School Boards Association.
  • 1999 - Elected Chairman of the Board of Keys Federal Credit Union.
  • 2000 - Elected Vice President of the Florida School Boards Association. Served on the Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary Tortugas 2000 committee to draw boundaries for the first no fishing zone in the keys.
  • 2001 - Elected Treasurer of the Florida School Boards Association.
  • 2002 Elected President-Elect of the Florida School Boards Association.
  • 2003-04 President. Florida School Boards Association. During that year I served on the Constitutional Accountability Commission. A 31 member statewide committee to interpret the States obligation to education funding after the constitutional change of 2000. Committee was chaired by former Attorney General Bob Butterworth and former State Comptroller Bob Milligan. I also officiated at a State press conference on this subject of education funding and as a result appeared in a national publication.
  • 2004 - Elected Chairman of the Monroe County School Board for the second time.
  • 2005 - Elected President after serving as VP and Treasurer to the South Florida Consortium of School Boards. This is a 12 member school district group that includes the school districts of Miami Dade, Broward and Palm Beach school districts. This year I also joined the small district council. A group of 34 school districts with student populations under 25,000.
  • 2006 - Elected Chairman of Monroe County School Board.
  • 2006 - I sold the property where my Charter boats were birthed and began donating my school board salary to the Take Stock in Children program. The State would match every dollar. To date I have donated over a quarter of a million dollars and every dollar was matched for a total of a half million dollars of scholarships to local high school students.

  • 2008 - Joined the local board of the United Way of Monroe County. 2 years after I joined I suggested changing the name to the United Way of the Florida Keys. The decision was unanimous. Started presenting the State School budget to Leadership Monroe. I continue this to present day.
  • 2009 - Elected Chairman of the Monroe County School Board for the third time. A very tumultuous year as our schools superintendent was removed from his office by the governor. The board began to meet weekly to manage the crisis. I was instrumental in assisting the governor’s office to appoint a new superintendent of schools for Monroe County.
  • 2010 - Elected President of the Greater Florida Consortium of School Boards. This was my second time serving as this was the previous South Florida Consortium. Membership included Martin, St Lucie, Palm Beach, Broward, Miami Dade, Monroe, Collier, Lee, Charlotte, Sarasota and Pinellas School Districts.
  • 2011 - Elected President of the United Way of the Florida Keys. Elected Chairman of the Monroe County School Board for the fourth time. During this year the voters elected to change the way we selected our schools superintendent from elected to appointed by the school board. I organized the very first search committee for our very first appointed schools Superintendent.
  • 2014 - Elected to the Board of Directors of the United Way of Florida. School Board hires its first superintendent of schools and I lead the process as the Chairman.
  • 2014 - Elected Chairman of Monroe County School Board.
  • 2015 - Elected Chairman of the Monroe County School Board for a fifth time.
  • 2018 - Elected Board of Directors for Florida School Board Association.
  • 2018 - Elected Chairman of United Way of Florida.
  • 2018 - Elected to The Rotary Club of Key West Foundation Board.
  • 2019 - Elected President of the United Way of Florida. Elected for a second time to the board of directors of the Florida School Boards Association.
  • 2019 - Elected President of the Greater Florida Consortium of School Boards for the second time.
  • 2022 - Elected Chair, Monroe County School Board for the seventh and final time.
  • 2021-2023 - Joined with Superintendent of MCSD to lobby legislators to fund 18 million dollars to renovate a historic building in Key West for district office space. This would allow for the relocation of 51 staff members resulting in freeing up 5 acres of land in downtown Key West for construction of teacher housing. First legislative session in this effort resulted in awarding the School Board 2 million dollars.
