I worked in the diversion program with minor first-time juvenile offenders who received community service hours as an alternative sanction to confinement. Processed all youth through the program, orientating them on policies, procedures, what to expect, and how I would support them to successfully complete the courts requirements. I was responsible for maintaining and organizing numerous crew schedules, jobs, equipment, locations and transportation. I also supervised a crew of my own on the weekends. Taught life and employment skills to the youth, such as, how to safely and properly load equipment, use a lawnmower, weed eater, maintain grounds, paint new surfaces, as well as cover graffiti throughout the city. There were five different districts we serviced and rotated the crews to maximize experience. There was also an educational/classroom component to the program where I conducted mock interviews, practiced filling out applications, taught interpersonal skills, importance of study and school participation, community referrals, when necessary, etc. For some of the youth, this program provided the only prosocial individuals or support they had in their life. The goal of this program was to impact change at the lowest level in efforts to encourage and empower the youth to make different choices in life and assist them in completing their alternative sanctions.
