Oversee and lead a team of four students to conduct research, follow scientific protocols, and produce a finished, professional academic study to aid the state of Nevada in desert research and continue its funding for the program. One year was primarily focused on determining if the cloning of plant DNA was possible in certain species and attempting the have the cloned DNA sequence published in the GenBook Encyclopedia for plant DNA sequences. Protocols included: obtaining and isolating plant DNA, using micropipettes to prepare accurate mixtures to extract/hold the DNA, centrifuging specimens, plating specimens and conducting gel electrophoresis. Another year was primarily focused on bacteriophage found within the Nevada desert soils. Both experiments were level 4 biohazard procedures where we had to maintain a sterile environment. We had to document and sign everything within a state official lab notebook and turn everything in to the state of Nevada at the end of the study. Time management and team work heavily influenced the results and quality of our findings and final scientific presentation.
