10 years of public service with Lions Club International

During my 10 years of service in the Lions club I have served my community in a variety of ways. My first big project was giving a helping hand to victims of a multi-unit apartment fire. Our club quickly came together with the help of social media and local residents. Items of clothing, items of hygiene and give cards were collected and delivered to the families in need. Partnering with our local Red Cross we assisted with hotel stays and comfort items of toys, blankets and food/snacks as well.

Throughout the year I volunteer as a liaison for school age children in need of glasses and eye exams. I receive applications from families in need that have barriers to the basic need of eye glasses. These children and families are provided free eye exams and free glasses from a local ophthalmologist in our town that is also a member of Lions club. It is with great enthusiasm and love to help with this gift of site.

Many volunteer hours are spent organizing and running fundraising events to provide the funds to facilitate the eye glasses and many other services and financial support my local Lions club provides. These include a giant Easter egg hunt for a small community struggling with poverty and the need for clean drinking water. In the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasoning we partner with the community, a local restaurant and our own funds to provide holiday dinners and gifts to needy families. It is a great joy to host such events and not only offer food and other items but to also show genuine love and kindness to struggling families and children.

All year long I am honored to attend weekly meetings with fellow Lion members to collaborate and plan ways to continue to serve. Being a member of this great international organization has taught me valuable skills such as communication, organization, identifying needs of others and planning well for future.
