Kindergarten Through Fifth Gr. Science Lab Teacher

  • Taught and worked with approximately 650 students per week in grades ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade.
  • Created interactive labs to engage student interest and curiosity in the Scientific Method, scientific concepts and critical thinking at each grade level.
  • Cultivated positive relationships with students, parents and staff to optimize instruction and support learning outcomes.
  • Communicated regularly with students and parents regarding classroom participation and behavior.
  • Evaluated students' by keeping appropriate records and preparing progress reports documenting participation and behavior.
  • Encouraged student interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) and Citizen Science.
  • Selected and prepared activities for 36 fourth and fifth graders weekly for participation in the North Carolina Science Olympiad competition. These pre-competition challenges afforded us many 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies at the competition, with 95% of our Olympians earning individual medals.
  • Prepared online labs and videos for remote learning during Covid.

Freedom School Partners changes the future for under-resourced students by giving them three life-changing tools: literacy skills, character strengths and a community that believes in them.

  • Volunteered to teach interactive science labs to Scholars.
  • Volunteered during Library days by helping Scholars select books appropriate to their reading levels.

Carolina Breast Friends

  • One of the founding board members and volunteers responsible for community outreach and interfacing with nurse navigators of area chemotherapy infusion centers to make sure Carolina Breast Friends (CBF) was meeting the needs of their patients.
  • The Susan G. Komen foundation and the nurse navigators referred patients to those of us at CBF who could offer perspective and support to women during any stage of their breast cancer journey.
  • I created the concept of Comfort Bags.
  • Students and families at Providence Day School collected the supplies and had the canvas bags made.
  • CBF volunteers put together and distributed over 1000 Comfort Bags each year that contained many items chemotherapy patients would need during their infusions.
