09/21/21, Safety Policies, In light of recent violent events surrounding our community, we are relentlessly working to ensure safety of all students and staff at Turner Elementary / Middle School. Unfortunately, challenges on social media have become a driving force for many behaviors observed. Therefore, it is crucial that parents/guardians of students clearly understand that demonstration of violent, unethical, and immoral behaviors at Turner will result in immediate Out of School Suspension. Our mission is to provide instruction to all students in a safe school environment conducive to learning. However, if participation in social media challenges outweigh receiving a quality education on campus, completion of such challenges can freely take place at home under the supervision of parents/guardians., Please be advised that there are currently policies in place to address safety which are monitored and enforced daily. Accordingly, we ask for your assistance with keeping all students safe by reviewing the current policies listed below and discussing their content/implications with your child:, NO Cell Phones Allowed – If a student must have his/her cell phone, it must not be visible. The cell phone should be inside a backpack and positioned to Off. At no time should it be powered-on during the school day. Cell phones will be confiscated and held for three days if seen in students’ pockets or hands. If a student refuses to release his/her phone when requested to do so, they will receive five days Out of School Suspension, allowing unlimited cell usage to transpire off campus at home. This policy is and will continue to be strictly enforced. Doing so assists immensely with prevention of students instigating fights and inhibits posting or sharing fights through social media platforms., NO Baseball Caps – Considering the abundance of responsibilities necessary to ensure our school campus remains safe and students are receiving quality instruction, the allotted time does not permit for investigation of embossed hat logos to determine possible gang affiliation, nor are there resources readily available to adequately complete such a task. As a result, baseball caps are not allowed., Supervised Restroom Breaks – No student will be allowed to leave their class for restroom usage Unsupervised. Due to high demands and easy influence of social media outlets, such as the 'restroom challenge,' students have been destroying and vandalizing restrooms to become famous through multiple viewings and recognition on these platforms. Any student caught participating in such behavior at Turner will receive five to nine days Out of School Suspension. At which time, desired celebrity status can be easily obtained through challenge involvement at home under parent/guardian supervision., Masks – Masks are required to be worn over the mouth and nose by all individuals while inside. Students who refuse to properly wear their mask, habitually break their mask, or intentionally break the mask of other students will be disciplined accordingly., Please understand, to prevent our school from becoming an unsafe environment in which the opportunity to learn is unattainable, student adherence to the above policies is vital. Therefore, it is my hope that all are reviewed in detail to not only support deliverance of quality instruction, but also our advocation of school safety at Turner Elementary / Middle School.
