Summary

Owing to my mother suffering from mental illness it influenced me to become a mental health nurse, qualifying in 2002. I observed that care practices were not always beneficial to service user needs and sometimes could even be harmful. Hence over time I gradually developed a research interest and focus in how to improve mental health care so that it is more therapeutic in mental health hospitals. This led me to engaging a PhD about how such care might improve for service users fitting the Pragmatism philosophy maxim that research ideally improves the lives of those most effected by the topic under study. It also has informed several educational outputs using Pragmatism to develop mental health nursing education, for example for the forthcoming evidence based practice chapter in the Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing: The Craft of Caring text (4th edition) for student mental health nurses.

Whilst I appreciate the requirements for a PhD for this editorial post it will be completed by early summer while it is important to note that every chapter has been written for an accepted publication. Essentially, I am an early researcher who is highly motivated about ensuring nursing education leads to improved care outcomes irrespective of what healthcare service a patient or service users are under. This has be shown with much of my work, such as being an editor for a nursing education textbook published by Routledge which underpins the nursing programme at the university of Exeter. In addition, I also led the editing of book underpinning the MSc module about providing care for people experiencing a mental health crisis. This text was published by McGraw-Hill Education.

I am very willing to learn and develop my aptitude within the editorial process of a renowned journal such as Nurse Education Today and see such opportunities as something that will personally enhance my life, given that I see nursing scholarship and research as an important vocation.
