First Grade Classroom Teacher

Canyon ISD
Canyon
08.2014 - 08.2024
  • For ten years I was a classroom teacher in a title 1 school teaching first graders, including SPED, TLC, and ESL students.
  • Classroom management in a structured, risk-free, loving classroom environment is where I feel like all learning starts.
  • I taught all core subjects, with the focus on reading. Which includes all aspects; phonics, oral language, phonological awareness, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.
  • I conducted daily 5 to 6 small reading groups of students on the same level to work on specific skills and comprehension.
  • This is a very important year of growth for students and making it fun and engaging is a huge key.
  • My goal is to encourage the love of reading and writing. If I am excited about the learning, so will they.
  • Writing is huge and the earlier they start understanding the basics of writing, the better.
  • This includes directionality, spatial awareness, sentence structure, punctuation and grammar.
  • We start the year working hard on handwriting and the formation of letters and review often.
  • Throughout the year the students learn how to write all different types of writing using the technical writing process: Prewriting, Planning, Drafting, Revising, Editing, Publishing.
  • I taught math concepts in a whole class setting with daily lessons, as well as in small groups.
  • I also would pull small groups or students one-on-one to re-teach concepts that students had misconceptions with or needed more practice on.
  • I also prepared and taught Science and Social Studies in a fun, interactive way.

Kindergarten Classroom Teacher

Morningside Elementary School
Dumas
08.2012 - 06.2014
  • For two years I was a classroom teacher in a Title 1 school teaching Kindergarten.
  • I was responsible for teaching all core subjects daily.
  • I learned how to manage behavior using a variety of strategies in a positive, structured environment where the students felt safe and knew what was expected of them.
  • I worked with many different ethnicities, religions, languages, and learning styles.
  • Some of my students in my class were fluent in English, some could barely speak any English and some didn't know English at all.
  • I would work with students on letter names and sounds for the whole class and in small groups.
  • Small groups were where I really focused on stretching sounds out, blending them together to make words and breaking sounds apart until eventually they could read short sentences.
  • My goal was to not only to teach my students the basics of letters, sounds, and reading but to develop a love for it.
  • I taught math daily for the whole class which was an overall introduction to numbers.
  • Students were expected to understand that numbers have value and be able to recognize and write them correctly.
  • As well as learn basic number sense, counting, beginning addition and subtraction, patterns, colors, measurement and place value.
  • In writing the focus was to first learn the correct way to hold a pencil and the correct pressure to use when writing.
  • Then we moved on to handwriting skills which included how to form each letter both capital and lowercase.
  • Towards the end of the year we started understanding when to use capital and lowercase letters, spacing between letters/words, and the correct size the letters should be.
  • I sometimes collaborated with the other Kindergarten teachers or worked alone to create interactive Science and Social Studies lessons that were aligned with the TEKS.

Paraprofessional

Oakridge Elementary School
Lubbock
08.2011 - 05.2012
  • This was a full-time intervention pull-out program for second graders that were struggling with anything related to the curriculum.
  • Teachers would let me know who needed extra help/practice or another mini lesson of that specific concept they were struggling with.
  • I would create lessons or fun activities to reinforce those concepts so they could see it in a different/ more engaging way.
  • I would take them to my classroom in small groups or work with them one-on-one during a time that they wouldn't miss any new curriculum.
  • I also was responsible for keeping records for each child, the frequency I would see them, the number of minutes weekly I saw them as well as what we worked on.
  • I would also document how long it would take them to master the concept or if they never did.
  • I would share information with their teachers and take documentation with me to SIT meetings and parent conferences to be able to share what I was observing.
  • Also, discuss next steps or other interventions we could do to make sure the child would be successful.
