Study Abroad Experience: During my second semester of my first year at the University of Wisconsin Madison, I partook in a program that concluded in a trip Puerto Rico.

  • The program was based around two courses that had a targeted focus of understanding the relationship between Puerto Rican citizenship, mainland America, and ecological restoration.
  • My classmates and I spent the semester focusing on community outreach and learning the history of Native Americans on the Ho-Chunk land which UW-Madison occupies. We connected the conditions and themes we learned about to studies on the history of Puerto Rico and its relationship with mainland America and the environment.
  • This all culminated in a trip to Puerto Rico, where my class partnered with the University of Aguadilla to work at restoration sites, replanting mangroves and native plants destroyed by previous natural disasters and learning about our partners experience as Puerto Rican citizens.
