A question you may have is why take a chance on a young adult with no degree. While I may be that, I have something that cannot be ignored, Experience. Throughout my life I have worked with kids, and done different types of jobs that have created and honed different skills to make me a great fit for Site lead. Communication, Organization, Administration Background, and most importantly past experience of acting site lead. This all being said, I also have one thing that you have to be born with and that is passion. I have this passion to help the Boys and Girls Club Height Extension grow and reach kids unveiling possibilities that they haven't even dreamed of yet. Being a club kid is a special thing, and I want every kid that walks in our doors to feel that.
I took this job on as it helped prepare me for my teaching degree (working currently on getting). This job was 8:30 - 12:30 where I would go to their house, and privately teach their son who is in 8th grade. I taught him English, History, Science, and Math.
As a private tutor, I developed interpersonal skills which are essential for effectively conveying information to the student in a way they understand. It taught me how to be able to read each kid differently and see their needs in that moment, whether its a low energy day because their tired, a minute just to vent because they feel frustrated, or a dance break to get energy out. It also taught me how to separate myself from the job. Yes I tutor him and teach him, but when I leave, Im onto the next thing. This helped create important barriers to create a safe relationship with boundaries.
Working at Boys and Girls club has grown me an incredible amount and given me a place to use all the skills I've collected over the years. I am currently working at the Heights extension with a team of 3 other people. Having such a small team has shown me the importance of communication to ensure we're all on the same page and have no misunderstandings. I am employed as the Gym coordinator where I get to help teach the kids positive competition and the importance of sportsmanship. My tasks look like having a gym activity everyday, having programs consistently going, assisting around club, being a safe adult in the kids lives, and helping them learn important communication skills.
While working at Boys and Girls club, another task I was given was being sub site lead when our site lead was out. I have plenty of experience leading and helping the club run efficiently and smoothly when they are gone.
In this job I helped plan, set up, and execute different events through Holland Recreation. Whether it was thanking sports teams sponsors, setting up registration for fall sports, putting on Holiday on the Farm, etc. I did it all. I ended up having to leave as they weren't flexible with me having to leave early to go into Boys and Girls Club Trainings.
That being said, working in administration provided me with a strong foundation in organization, multitasking, planning and executing events, and so much more. It helped me realize the importance of every little thing and how much work is done in the background to put on events. Lastly, my experience there helped hone my problem solving and decision skills enabling me to address different challenges, and address challenges smoothing consisting to a smooth operation of any organization.
I worked at Camp Beechpoint simply pouring the love of our Savior into these kids who may not hear it. My duties include leading a small group of high risk and high behavior kids for a summer being their safe adult along with my coleader at the same time. This looked like leading devotions, teaching different activities (archery, rifles, horses, etc), helping navigate disputes between two campers and so much more. This job helped teach me patience when it comes to navigating through situations but also patience for their growth. Growth doesn't happen over night and it needs constant attention and consistency in order to happen.
This job taught me to hone in my skills of time management and attention to detail, ensuring every task is done efficiently but also to the highest standard. This job also strengthened my teamwork and communication abilities as I had to work with a team to make sure everything got done and to the guests standards. It helped create me into a reliable and effective team member who will put her all into any job she is given.
This job I simply helped the guys with whatever they needed, whether it was bending metal, working with the laser cutter, painting and cleaning the beams. It truly made me branch out and I loved working there but had to put my employment on pause due to going back to school.
This job still taught me a lot even in its short time. Working in a manufacturing setting equipped me with a strong understanding of process optimization and quality control. This is essential for maintaining efficiency and accuracy in any operation. This job made me develop problem solving skills as everyday was a new set of problems and jobs. It helped hone me being able to think on my toes and get items checked off. Additionally this experience reinforced the importance of teamwork and clear communication as I came in as the underdog not knowing much. I had to watch, learn, and advocate for myself by asking questions all quickly so that we could stay on the production deadline. This has enabled me to learn quickly on the job while still getting items done at a high quality.
While working at Holland Recreation, I held the title of Soccer Coach. I coached Little Kickers which is a program for 4 - 6 year olds learn fine motor skills through the sport of soccer. During my time there I also picked up different shifts to help Holland Rec. This looked like helping lead dance lessons or helping out with Kid Fun nights.
Working as a soccer coach has equipped me with strong leadership and communication skills. In this position I had to lead and be outspoken to get the kids to a common goal but also to get the team of other coaches to the same goal. This job helped me learn how to inspire and develop others in growth which I believe is valuable to any leadership role.
