Gathering situational awareness on a State DOT road network in the
Traffic Management Center (TMC)
•
Monitoring traffic cameras installed along the road network. and declaring
and responding to traffic incidents in a timely manner. Monitor the
roadways and detect traffic incidents including abnormal traffic congestion
on the DOT road network, employing CCTV cameras. congestion
information from state and commercial sources. crowdsourcing application
s (e.g. Google Traffic and Waze), and through close working relationships
with operating partners (e.g. Police, DOT etc.)
•
Dispatching DOT staff and contracted crew for routine and emergency road
traffic maintenance activities, such as. pothole repair. traffic sign/ pavement
marking maintenance. electrical traffic control device maintenance, salting
and snow removal.

Pro-actively monitor the DOT's road network and review road closures. To
notify relevant DOT staff of any unauthorized road closures detected or
notified by internal/external agencies
•
Pro-actively monitor field equipment. dashboards and software /hardware
used in the TMC and report any deficiencies to appropriate DOT
maintenance staff

• Utilize TMC equipment and TMC software to actively monitor traffic

Monitor the operation of the DOT's traveler information channels to ensure
that information is communicated in a timely manner, that it is accurate,
and that it is useful for the intended target audience

Monitor other DOT public service platforms to verify the accuracy of
traveler information (e.g. road restriction map, Queue-End Warning System
and social media). and report deficiencies to the DOT (e.g. presentation of
inaccurate information)
