Boatswain's Mates (BM) train, direct, and supervise personnel in ship's maintenance duties in all activities relating to marlinespikes, decks, boat seamanship, painting, upkeep of ship's external structure, rigging, deck equipment, and life boats; take charge of working parties; perform seamanship tasks; act as petty officer-in-charge of picket boats, self-propelled barges, tugs, and other yard and district crafts; and operate and maintain equipment used in loading and unloading cargo, ammunition, fuel, and general stores. The student will be able to perform look-out and helmsman duties; conduct line, rope, and wire splicing; understand operation and use of dock fittings and equipment; perform basic rigging operations; operate and maintain mooring and anchoring equipment; use and maintain life-saving equipment; respond and react to emergency situations; inspect and maintain safety equipment; perform initial assessments to identify life-threatening conditions; determine if serious warning signs are present and treat accordingly; perform initial triage; provide appropriate patient care based on assessment: prepare patient for transport; take and document vital signs; inspect, repair, and replace fire and marine safety equipment; utilize proper personal protective equipment (PPE) respond to fuel spills; conduct a safety briefing: perform job safety analysis; apply principles of machine safety; complete material safety data sheet (MSDS) correctly using current industry standards; load and unload cargo; launch and recover small boats; operate winches, cranes, and davits; manage cargo replenishment evolutions; perform rigging computations; repair cargo handling equipment; and unpack cargo for storage.
