On January 12, 2017 my life changed forever. A routine surgery led to two years and countless trials aimed at treating an incurable brain condition I developed as a result of that fateful surgery. At the same time, I was enrolled at the U.S. Naval Academy, fighting to keep alive my lifelong dream of serving the country. After learning to walk again multiple times and defying doctors’ expectations, I was unfortunately forced to medically retire and revise my dreams. I transferred to Villanova and through courses like organic and inorganic chemistry, realized that I had a newfound passion. My new goal is to pursue a career in Organic and Medicinal chemistry, uniting my commitment to service and academic focus.
A significant piece of my Villanova experience has been undergraduate research with the Casillas Group conducting a novel total synthesis of an acylated phloroglucinol. Ultimately, because of my personal experiences with powerful medications, I am driven to research pharmaceuticals that are safer for the patient, with fewer side effects and toxic byproducts. The WHO lists the concept of protecting lifesaving medicines as one of its 13 global health challenges over the next decade. I will be part of the solution in protecting critical medications. With the pandemic, the world has witnessed the very real need for groundbreaking research to combat new and deadly pathogens. As a scientist, I will play a critical role in that mission.
Due to my recent history, I’ve developed a passion for pushing the boundaries of what others think is possible. Faced with seemingly insurmountable odds myself, I’ve proven my ability to think creatively and work as part of a collaborative team to make the impossible happen.
I am confident that I can make a difference and leave a tangible impact. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions. I can be reached at 802-881-7165 or kjaunich@villanova.edu. Thank you for your consideration, and I hope to hear from you soon.
