Experience

CONDUCTING NESTING SURVEYS

Conducted nesting surveys under MTP-120 and permit holder Sharon Maxwell, in Walton County, 2013 to present

Independently surveyed Miramar Beach, 3-4 days a week annually since 2013

Trained 25+ volunteers for Miramar area

Trained new area coordinators and their volunteers for other areas in Walton County

Kept consistent data and records including year end nesting survey and hatching success reports to FWC

Coordinated volunteer scheduling and leave requests
Strong skills in communication with volunteers and permit holder

Personally observed and documented approximately 53 crawls within the last two years and >100 over previous years

Trained by Sharon Maxwell and Erica Magera (previous Miramar area coordinator) and have the ability to successfully demonstrate and teach the following with adherence to FWC guidelines as outlined in the handbook:

  • Obtain accurate GPS, measurements of both the crawl and nesting locations
  • Determination of incoming/outgoing crawl
  • Determine the species of sea turtle that made the crawl/nest
  • Ability to determine the difference between a nest and non nesting emergence
  • Successfully marked nests using visual characteristics
  • Able to locate clutch when screening, caging or relocating is necessary
  • Continuously monitor nests daily throughout the duration of incubation
  • Ability to determine an indentation as well as hatching emergence
  • Identify and report disorientation and obstructed nesting attempts
  • Recovery and release of disoriented hatchlings
  • Successfully manage crowds during nesting, hatching, and evaluations
  • Stranding response and documention
  • Live turtle transport to rehab facility

Successfully watch for signs of depredation and treatment if needed

Experience with depredation from ghost crabs, ants, raccoons, bobcats, fox, coyote and feline cats.
