My name is Lacy Thompson, and I am seeking a full-time position Access Points/ESE. As an intern at Plant City High School, I was able to strengthen skills in the following areas: diverse talents in preparing lessons, delivering explicit and systematic lectures to students, creating accompanying multimedia presentations, and creating appropriate and differentiated assessments for various subjects. As a VE co-teacher in the mathematics setting at Newsome High School, I was able to further my skills in those areas while working with seasoned teachers to sharpen specific teaching skills that are essential to being an effective teacher. I am personable in answering students' questions about lecture information, course materials, and assessments to provide clarity. I deliver solutions, prompt further research and spark discussions on important subject matter topics. As an access points teacher in both the elementary and high school setting, I have had the opportunity to experience students on many levels, behaviorally, academically, and social/emotionally. I have had opportunities to see various strategies and skills be put to use to manage each classroom, as well as opportunities to learn how to build relationships with students of all ages and capabilities.
As an access teacher in the high school setting, I have learned a variety of new things. Classroom management for high school is a bit different than elementary school, even in the access points classroom. I have learned to adjust my classroom expectations to meet the needs of high school aged students. I have learned about behavior management in ways that are significantly different from the elementary school setting, and have made progress in my understanding and ability to implement various forms of PBIPs/FBA's and other forms of positive behavior interventions. I have also learned to work with a number of paraprofessionals/aides, as opposed to just one like I had at the elementary level.
During my time at Burney, I learned new classroom management skills for new behaviors and ages. I learned how to navigate brand new curriculum and better ways to scaffold for the various levels that my students were at.
