Serving as a Firefighter GS-7 for the Fort Wainwright Fire Department protecting the assets and personnel I have gained knowledge of basic and specialized structural firefighting equipment such as fire alarm system operation, fire extinguishing equipment operation, fire hydrant operation, techniques, and procedures; and of basic and specialized building design, construction, and occupancy; In addition with being responsible for performing technical rescue operations to include confined space, high angle, low angle trench rescue, and auto extrication. Also, responsible for wildland firefighting, aircraft firefighting and rescue operations, hazardous materials, decontamination, and other emergency responses. Relying on senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch to help determine the nature of emergency, maintain personal safety, and make critical decisions in a confused, chaotic, and potential life threatening environment through out the duration of the operation. Participated in regular training and exercises as required and Maintained good working relations; and communicated orally and in writing when necessary. Maintained strong knowledge of firefighting principles and suppression methods, which enabled proper decision-making in emergency situations

I've Had the opportunity to TDY to other fire departments to see how they operate to better understand my role as a firefighter and fire department cultures from multiple points of view. Maintained strong knowledge of firefighting principles and suppression methods, which enabled proper decision-making in emergency situations. Operated both as a member of a team and independently at incidents. Operated as a relief driver operator to drive, positioning large fire apparatus and utilizing safe driving techniques. Working for long periods of time, requiring sustained physical activity and intense concentration. Facing exposure to carcinogenic dusts such as asbestos, toxic substances such as hydrogen cyanide, acids, carbon monoxide, or organic solvents either through inhalation or skin contact. Responded to EMS and hazardous material incidents. Used direct pressure and in some cases used tourniquets to stop bleeding, checked windpipe for obstructions, perform CPR and/or provide other appropriate assistance.
