Location: UMass Memorial Medical Center - Memorial Campus
Position Summary: Under the direction of the Sterile Processing Manager and or direction of the Sterile Processing Supervisor, identifies, inspects, assembles and sterilizes equipment, supplies and procedure trays. Packages, cleans and decontaminates routine surgical instruments, patient care equipment and monitors sterilizers and associated equipment. Responsible for stocking of supplies & instruments. Displays familiarity with case cart process, instrument pick lists and instrument repair process. Demonstrates willingness to learn all aspects of the Sterile Processing Department including, but not limited to, surgical services, outside clinics Orthopedics, Cardiac, Neuro and Vascular Instrumentation, Implant trays, Power equipment, Flexible endoscopes and the Instrument Management System.Major Responsibilities:Ensures proper decontamination of surgical instruments, syringes, and equipment in order to clean, identify and inspect.Maintains a clean and safe work environment. Contributes to the efficient operation of the department.Attends variety of meetings, conferences, and seminars as required or directed.Demonstrates use of quality improvement in daily operations. Position Qualifications: License/Certification/Education: Required: High school diploma or equivalent. Experience/Skills: Required: Minimum of 1 year of experience in Central Processing or related field. Currently enrolled in a Surgical Technician or Sterile Processing course with no experience will be considered. Knowledge of sterilization standards and procedures and Central Service related medical terminology. Ability to adequately use or learn to use the departments computerized system and its associated devices. Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements, will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents. Physical Demands Position requires ability to repeatedly lift objects of more than 50 pounds. Good hand and eye coordination, walking and standing, see objects closely and hear normal sounds with some background noises. Must be able to focus on fine detail with interruption and have the ability to concentrate on task for more than 60 minutes at a time. Individual must have knowledge of the principles of body mechanics for lifting and moving of equipment and instrumentation. Environmental ConditionsEmployee may constantly be exposed to blood, and tissue or fluids; hazardous waste materials, hazardous materials such as chemicals. Self-motivated, able to work independently with little supervision and have the ability to assist in the training of new Sterile Processing Technicians. Must exercise good judgment, discretion and appropriate communication skills in channeling numerous inquiries. Flexibility:Must be able to rotate shifts and work overtime according to the needs of the department and be able to change daily work assignments to better the needs of the department. Works well under pressure, being able to prioritize multiple tasks and / or requests for service. Service Excellence:Must be able to make a positive first impression and present yourself professionally, treat everyone with respect. Must help lost people find their way, respect peoples time, take special care of unhappy customers. Provides exceptional customer service on the phone and communicate clearly and concisely. Individual must perform other similar and related duties as required or directed.
