Accomplishments

  • Conducted genome annotation and host range expansion research on Gordonia terrae's phage "Capybara," a novel genome. Data and my name will be posted on Genbank website in Spring of 2024 as a coauthor. (GenBank URL: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genbank/)
  • University of Pittsburgh Deans List 2024 Spring semester.
  • National Honors Society member.

Novel Genome Annotation Details

  • Application of various software such as BLAST, GeneMark, Glimmer, Starterator, HHPred and Phamerator were used to uncover genome position, specific gene start sites, and predict gene function based off close relatives of phage Capybara.
  • Conducted wet lab research of another phage named "EdnaMode" that was known to infect bacteria isolation host Gordonia terrae.
  • Phage EdnaMode was serial diluted with phage buffer in a ten fold serial dilution process. Phage buffer, 100% concentrated phage, and all serial dilutions were plated on to alternate Gordonia hosts to observe possible host range expansion and infer further information concerning minor tail proteins.
  • Titer and Efficiency of Plating were calculated.
