Field Experience

  • Exploration Ecology, University of Alaska Anchorage, Anchorage, Ak, 08/2022 - Current. During the school semester of Fall 2022, I was enrolled in Exploration Ecology with Doctor Douglas Causey. The class explored principles and techniques used for the study and collection of baseline ecological data in remote landscapes. Applied field survey and analytical resources to ecological project design and implementation. The specific project I chose to research was juvenile salmon populations in the Portage Valley drainage system. Skills used were learning how to bait minnow traps and determining the proper locations that the traps would be most efficient. After the fish were caught, I then proceeded to sedate them and measure and inspect them. After a few months of gathering research, I complied a research paper of my results and had it sent to the US Forest service so they could use my results in the future. I gained knowledge and new skills during my field research. It furthered my need and desire to work in the fields of ecology, biology, conservation, etc. After the fall semester, I continued to work with Professor Douglas Causey on the juvenile salmon population research project. I am currently still monitoring the populations and recording my findings to eventually compile an overview of the data found in the past decade. I also integrated an assessment of beaver dams throughout Portage Valley to help understand the salmon's habitat in greater detail.
  • Plant Diversity and Evolution, University of Alaska Anchorage, Anchorage, AK, 01/2023 - 05/2023. During the spring semester of 2023 I was enrolled in Plant Diversity and Evolution with Doctor Matt Carlson. This course focused on understanding, organizing, and describing plant diversity in relation to evolutionary principles; integrating data to address hypotheses; and exposure to identification and classification of the Alaskan flora. For the entirety of the class, I collected a multitude of different flora from around the Turnagain Arm region. After collecting, observing, and recording the attributes of the different floras, whether it be alders, shrubs, trees, flowers, etc., I then proceeded to go into detail of the species habitats, descriptions, uses, and evolutionary history. This class significantly increased my understanding of Alaska's flora and the functions of plants and the important roles they play in ecosystems as well as many aspects of humans lives such as agriculture, economies, etc.
